The objective of the research is to improve the capacity for Australia to achieve sustainable development for regional communities by developing processes that:
- Integrate community and scientific knowledge
- Improve procedural justice in decision-making
- Develop a greater understanding of community capacity to manage change
These project objectives will be met through a three stage process; the first stage will map the major issues facing the region through interviews with stakeholders and through literature reviews. The second stage will explore stakeholder perspectives on knowledge and justice, undertaken through interviews, workshops and community forums. The third stage will analyse the data, examining power, knowledge and fairness concepts, and will conclude with a final report containing guidelines and recommendations, and workshop to present the project findings.
The outcomes of this research will advance the theoretical 'state of the art' in understanding procedural justice, knowledge building and social change. The research will also provide 'best practice' guidelines for stakeholders at all levels to implement effective strategies for engagement.
